Kolhapur: Two academics in the Chemistry department of Shivaji University, Kolhapur were granted with patent for their work on anti-breast cancer drug molecules.

Dr Prakash Bansode, a PhD student, has been researching on “Synthetic studies in new anti-Cancer therapeutics” under the guidance of his research supervisor Dr Gajanan Rashivade at SU. He has synthesized several drug lead molecules active against a variety of cancers during his PhD work.

These two academicians have been granted with an Indian Patent on “Ferrocene labelled N-heterocyclic carbene complexes of silver gold and platinum.”

Breast cancer was one of the most frequently diagnosed malignancies and leading cause of death in females worldwide. The heterogeneity and complex biomolecular profile further makes breast cancer, one of the most aggressive human cancers.

The existing therapies for treatment of breast cancer include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery and use of monoclonal antibodies etc. These treatments have severe side effects adverse drug reactions, high treatment cost and sometime treatment failures. To overcome these issues, Prof. Dr Rashinkar and Dr. Bansode have synthesized ten new ferrocene labelled N-heterocyclic carbene complexes of silver gold and platinum in their laboratory. (UNI)
