Election Results 2021: Mamata thanks people for TMC’s double ton, says she would move SC against EC over Nandigram

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has been defeated at Nandigram assembly seat but her TMC party is set for the 3rd term in power in Bengal, on Sunday said she would move in the Supreme Court against the EC.

Addressing the media, Ms Banerjee, while thanking the people for voting the TMC for the third time in power since 2011, said the voters chose to have a government with a double ton figure in the assembly and rejected the “double engine” government of BJP.

The TMC is set to win over 200 seats in the 294-seat for which the election held for 292 seats in the eight phases.

Accepting the verdict of Nandigram people for her defeat by 1957 votes to BJP candidate Suvendu Adhikari Ms Banerjee said “Don’t worry about Nandigram, I struggled for Nandigram because I fought a movement. It’s okay. Let the Nandigram people give whatever verdict they want, I accept that. I don’t mind. We won more than 221 seats and BJP has lost the election.”

Earlier in the day the ECI had announced Ms Banerjee won by 1200 votes at the end of 17th round.

But the ECI retracted and said the Nandigram seat was won by BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari by 1957 votes.

Ms Banerjee, who has been critical since the ECI announced an eight phase polling, said she would appeal all the opposition parties to get together for a concerted move in the Supreme court bench against the poll body.

She said all the political parties must give a thought that a constitutional poll body cannot go like this by the nominated members at the top.

The chief minister also demanded that the centre must provide free vaccination jabs for Covid-19

She told her supporters not to hold celebration rally right now because of pandemic and said the TMP will have a bigger celebration at the Brigade Parade ground at an appropriate time.

Ms Banerjee also said that the swearing ceremony of the government will also have in a small manner. (UNI)
