'Punjab Kesari' Lala Lajpat Rai remembered on his 92nd death anniversary

New Delhi: Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar and Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Tuesday saluted Punjab Kesari Lala Lajpat Rai on his 92nd death anniversary.
"A lot of respects to the Punjab Kesari Lala Lajpat Rai on his death anniversary," tweeted Mr Javadekar. 
 
Mr Naqvi's tweet read, "Salute to the leading pillar of nationalism, the great freedom fighter, the leading pillar of nationalism in India's freedom struggle 'Punjab Kesari' Lala Lajpat Raion his death anniversary."
 
Born on January 28, 1865, he was one of the three Lal-Bal-Pal triumvirates. He was also associated with activities of Punjab National Bank (PNB) and Lakshmi Insurance Company (LIC) in their early stages in 1894.
 
In 1928 he introduced the legislative assembly resolution for the boycott of the British Simon Commission on constitutional reform. When the Commission visited Lahore on 30 October 1928, Lajpat Rai led a non-violent march in protest against it. The protesters chanted "Simon go back" and carried black flags.
 
The superintendent of police, James A Scott, ordered the police to lathi (baton) charge the protesters and personally assaulted Rai, who died shortly thereafter i e on November 17, after succumbing to his injuries.(UNI)
