New Delhi: Actors Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam are set to bring to the screen the real-life story from the 1980s, centred on the landmark Mohd. Ahmed Khan vs. Shah Bano Begum case.
The teaser of the film, titled HAQ, has been unveiled, offering a glimpse into the gripping courtroom drama as Shah Bano Begum’s fight for justice and rights unfolds.
In the lead roles, Hashmi steps into the shoes of Mohd. Ahmed Khan, while Gautam portrays Shah Bano Begum, with the teaser highlighting their intense legal battle and powerful face-off inside the courtroom.
The teaser of HAQ opens with Emraan Hashmi’s character lashing out at Yami Gautam, accusing her of being an irresponsible wife. In a sharp rebuttal, Yami declares, “My fight is just for one thing - my rights.”
As the teaser unfolds, it captures the intensity of a case that gripped the nation, portraying the rising tension and unrest surrounding it. The visuals highlight the fiery courtroom clashes, with Hashmi and Gautam’s characters locked in a bold confrontation.
One of the most powerful moments shows Yami asserting in court, “I am not just a Muslim woman, but I am a Muslim woman of India, and I belong to this country. Hence, the law should treat me the same way as it treats other women of the country.”
The makers revealed that the film draws inspiration from the landmark Supreme Court judgement in Mohd. Ahmed Khan vs. Shah Bano Begum. They shared, “Shazia Bano takes her husband Abbas to court after he abandons her and their children, sparking a national debate on faith, women’s rights, and justice. HAQ is the story of one woman’s relentless fight for her dignity and rights.”
Directed by Suparn S. Varma, the film also stars Vartika Singh, Danish Husain, Sheeba Chadha, and Aseem Hattangady in pivotal roles.
Backed by Junglee Pictures, HAQ is produced by Vineet Jain, Vishal Gurnani, Juhi Parekh Mehta, and Harman Baweja. The film is slated to release in the theatres on November 7, 2025.
