Mumbai: Despite the protests that have marred its release in many states, Sanjay Leela bhansali's'Padmaavat ' continues its strong run at the box office in India , earning a whopping Rs 80 cr at the box office in India in its first three days, trade sources said on Sunday.
The film, which released worldwide on January 25, earned approximately Rs 28 cr on its third day on Saturday , taking its total earnings in three days to around Rs 80 cr. Despite multiplexes in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Goa not screening the film due to protests and Haryana; Uttar Pradesh and Bihar seeing a limited release, early estimates say the film has seen a huge jump in its earnings on Friday and Saturday.
While it earned Rs 32 cr on Republic day On Friday, it earned around Rs 28 cr on Saturday. The film earned around Rs 19 cr from across India on its opening day on Thursday. The film has thus earned approximately Rs 80 cr in its first three days.
With the film continuing to draw huge crowds at the theatres , trade sxperts feel 'Padmaavat ' is expected to cross the Rs 100 cr mark at the end of its four days weekend.
Trade experts say the film has taken a good opening overseas as well. Padmaavat has been performing impressively in the US and Canada.The Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor starrer has earned nearly 1.20 million us dollars on the opening day in US and Canada, which is an all-time record.
Starring Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, and Shahid Kapoor, 'Padmaavat ' is based on the poem Padmavat, written by a 16th-century poet, Malik Muhammad Jayasi.It tells the tale of the beautiful Rani Padmini of Chittor, and how she avoided falling into the clutches of Turkish invader, Alauddin Khilji, by committing self-immolation or Jauhar.
The film has been embroiled in a controversy with the Rajput Karni Sena protesting the release of the film, charging Bhansali of distorting history. (UNI)
