Devshayani Ekadashi, observed on the Shukla Paksha Ekadashi of Ashadha month, marks the beginning of Chaturmas—the four-month period during which Lord Vishnu “sleeps” on the Sheshnag. In 2025, this auspicious day falls on Sunday, 6 July. To honour its sanctity and invite blessings, devotees must maintain purity in thought, word, and deed. Here are five things you must strictly avoid on Devshayani Ekadashi, or you may invite unwanted obstacles in life.

1. Chewing Paan (Betel Leaf)

Paan is considered sattvic-incompatible and heightens Rajas (passion and restlessness) in the mind.

2. Using Toothpaste or Manjan

Traditional observance prescribes cleaning teeth only with datun (twig from neem or babool).

3. Violating Brahmacharya (Celibacy)

Sexual activity on Ekadashi is thought to disturb the mind’s focus and dilute devotional energy.

4. Indulging in Negative or Violent Acts

Getting angry or harboring ill-will, gambling or playing cards, lying, stealing, backbiting, or slander is strictly prohibited on this day. Such behavior reduces social respect, and may attract shame or conflict.

5. Watering the Tulsi Plant

Mother Tulsi undertakes a fast on this day (and also on Sundays), symbolizing her own Ekadashi observance.
