Official sources said that the festival would commence with the traditional hoisting of the holy flag atop the 56-feet-high gold plated “dwajasthambam” (Flag mast) of Lord Sundareswarar on April 29.
As part of the Chithirai festival, the “Meenakshi Pattabishekam” (Coronation of goddess Meenakshi) would be performed on May 6 and the famous “Thirukkalyanam” (Celestial wedding event) would be conducted on May 8.
The temple car festival was slated on May 9, followed by the spectacular event of “Lord Kallazhagar entering into River Vaigai” event on May 12.
The Chithirai Brahmotsavam of Sri Meenakshi-Sundareswarar Temple is also a confluence of lakhs of people of two Hindu sects – the Shaivites and Vaishnavites.
The district administration in coordination with various government departments, including the Hindu Religious and Endowment Department were gearing up for the grand festival, as lakhs of devotees from various parts of the Country and abroad were expected to participate in the Chithirai Festival.
