Islamabad: Clashes erupted on Tuesday between police and a group of PTI supporters outside Adiala Jail, in Pakistan’s Rawalpindi district of Punjab, following the jail administration denying visitation permission to former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s sister Aleema Khan.

The founder of the Pakistan-Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has been incarcerated in Adiala Jail for two years alongwith his wife Bushra Bibi, and several other high ranking PTI officials after being convicted on corruption charges.

After the police administration denied her permission to visit the former Pakistani PM, Aleema Khan started a sit-in protest outside the prison premises.

She was joined by her sister Uzma Khan, as well as her cousins and some women activists, with the guards escorting them to a nearby marriage hall so as to not disrupt law and order, as per Dawn.

As news spread of the incident, a group of PTI supporters gathered outside the marriage hall and shouted slogans in favour of their leader and demanded his release from the jail. This eventually led to stone pelting by the crowd, resulting in the police baton charging them and then temporarily detaining Khan’s family members.

PTI leader Barrister Gohar Ali Khan condemned the detention of the former PM’s family members, calling it illegal and unconstitutional, saying that a prisoner also has rights.

Speaking about the events that transpired outside the prison, the PTI leader said that Aleema Khan told the police that she would not leave the premises unless a meeting was arranged with her brother. After six hours, the police detained the sisters of Imran Khan along with PTI leader Sahibzada Hamid Raza.

After defusing the situation, the police personnel sent Khan's sisters back to Lahore under police protection via a motorway.
