Pope Francis passed away on Monday at the age of 88 at his residence in the Vatican.
Issuing a statement on its official social media account, Vatican wrote: “Pope Francis died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88 at his residence in the Vatican's Casa Santa Marta.”
A day earlier, Pope made a brief appearance at St. Peter's Square to mark Easter Sunday, although the Mass was delivered by a high-ranking cardinal as the pontiff was recovering from double pneumonia.
He was hospitalized on February 14 after breathing problems developed into a severe respiratory infection. He was recovering from double pneumonia, which left him fighting for his life in the hospital for a month.
