The second Kharmas usually takes place in the months of December and January, when the Sun transits from Scorpio to Sagittarius. In 2024, Kharmas begins on December 15 and ends on January 14.

The Legend of Kharmas
The origin of Kharmas is linked to a mythological story involving Surya Dev (the Sun God) and his seven celestial horses. Legend has it that Surya Dev's horses, who tirelessly pulled his chariot across the cosmos, grew weary from their arduous journey. To provide them with rest, Surya Dev temporarily replaced them with a pair of donkeys (khar), slowing the pace of his celestial journey. This period of slower cosmic movement is believed to be inauspicious for worldly activities, hence the name Kharmas.
Significance of Kharmas
While Kharmas is often associated with restrictions, it also holds spiritual significance. It is considered a time for introspection, prayer, and charitable deeds. Many Hindus observe fasts, perform religious rituals, and engage in spiritual practices during this period.
