Agartala: A Bangladeshi woman landed in jail at Dharmanagar in North Tripura on Thursday following a court order for illegally crossing over to India with her paramour.

They sneaked into Indian Territory, managing close vigilance of BSF and barbed wire fencing from Moulvibazar district of Bangladesh on Wednesday night.

According to the police, Fatema Nusrat (24) a mother of two children from Bangladesh fell in love with Nur Jalal (34) – a traditional hailer of Fulbari village located in the Assam-Tripura border during his stay in Bangladesh two months ago. Jalal used to visit Bangladesh frequently to procure herbs and plants for pursuing his profession.

Nusrat told police that Jalal met Fatema Nusrat at the residence of her in-laws in Moulvibazar, and they used to meet regularly.

As their relationship grew older, they decided to go for wedlock, but since she was already married, it would create complications for Jalal if their relationship became public. As a result, they eloped a week ago and entered India.

Acting on a tip-off, police raided Jalal’s house in Fulbari on Thursday and detained Nusrat, but smelling the police presence, Jalal fled away.

Later, Nusrat was produced before the court. The Chief Judicial Magistrate of North Tripura remanded her to 14 days of judicial custody for illegally entering India and directed police to find Jalal.

“We have registered a case of cheating against Nur Jalal and launched a search,” said OC Churaibari Samaresh Das, adding that police have been exploring other angles, including the involvement of smuggling and trafficking links. (UNI)
