Srinagar/Sonamarg: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday expressed confidence that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would honor his promise of restoring Jammu & Kashmir's statehood, just as he delivered on the commitment to hold Assembly elections in the region.
Addressing a rally at Sonamarg after Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the strategic Z-Morh or Sonamarg tunnel in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, Chief Minister Omar reflected on the Prime Minister's earlier commitment to reducing both the "distance from Delhi" and the "distance from hearts."
“Prime Minister Sahab when you visited Srinagar after your third electoral victory, during International Yoga Day, you made a few promises to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, which strengthened their faith in your words. You spoke about addressing three key issues: bridging the gap of mistrust and reducing the distance between Delhi and the hearts of the people. You have demonstrated your commitment through actions,” Abdullah said.
The Chief Minister highlighted the recent developmental strides under the Prime Minister's leadership.
“Within 15 days, you held two major programs focused on Jammu & Kashmir’s development. You inaugurated the Jammu Rail Division, and now, you are here in Sonamarg, inaugurating this transformative tunnel. Projects like these not only bring people closer at heart but also reduce the geographical divide,” he said.
Referring to the Prime Minister's promise regarding elections, Abdullah said, “True to your word, elections were held within four months, giving the people a chance to exercise their democratic right. Today, as the Chief Minister, I am here addressing this gathering because of those elections, which were conducted transparently. Credit for this goes to you, your team, and the Election Commission of India.”
He added that people frequently inquire about the restoration of Jammu & Kashmir’s statehood.
“Just as you honored your promise for elections, I firmly believe you will soon honor your third promise, ensuring that Jammu & Kashmir regains its status as a state,” Abdullah said, drawing applause from the crowd.
Abdullah expressed heartfelt thanks to the Prime Minister for braving the severe cold to attend the event.
“Today on this happy occasion I want to thank the Prime Minister with the core of my heart that despite of severe cold you made it to Sonamarg and inaugurated the tunnel”, Omar said and added, “ Prime Minister Sahab you might have seen that there is not a single cloud visible in the sky as weather has also supported you….the cold weather is there but no shortage of sunshine”.
“Of course, there is cold outside but there is no shortage of warmth in our hearts”, the Chief Minister said, adding “Prime Minister had a special bonding with Jammu and Kashmir and often remembered us how many times he had visited the place and how many times he stayed here…we will hope that you should come here again and again and remain in between us and join the joyous moments with us”.
Abdullah also paid tribute to the seven workers of the construction company who killed in a terror attack in October last year.
"Their sacrifice for this project, for the development of Jammu & Kashmir, and the nation, will forever remain etched in our hearts," he remarked.
He also highlighted the enduring sacrifices made by the people of Jammu & Kashmir over the past 35 years, noting the region's resilience against forces seeking to derail its democratic and developmental aspirations.
