BJP dumps partner BPF and joins hands with UPPL in Assam

Guwahati:Sidelining it's Dispur coalition partner BPF, the BJP on Sunday joined hands with the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) to form the next Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC). 
Announcing the tie-up between UPPL, BJP and Gana Sangram Parishad (GSP), Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said here on Sunday that the UPPL will lead the new Council. 
 
The UPPL will be the largest party in the alliance with 12 members, while BJP has eight members and GSP one. 
 
UPPL's chief Pramod Boro will be the new Chief Executive Member, while the Deputy CEM is likely to be from the BJP. 
 
The Bodoland People's Front  (BPF) has emerged as the single largest party with 17 wins, while the Congress and AIUDF combine managed to secure just one seat in the 40-member Council. 
 
Though the BJP and BPF are part of the BJP-led coalition government in the state, the two parties had fought against each other in the BTC elections. 
 
State Cabinet Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said the BJP will continue its alliance with the BPF at the state level till 2021 state Assembly elections, but not in the BTC. 
 
The two-phase BTC elections were held on December 7 and 10, and the counting of votes undertaken on Saturday. (UNI)
