Cyclone Biparjoy to make landfall today, over 74,000 evacuated in Gujarat

The Cyclone Biparjoy is expected to make landfall near Jakhau Port in Gujarat's Kutch district between 4-5pm on Thursday. The state administration has evacuated more than 74,000 people living near the coast and shifted them to shelter homes.

“VSCS Biparjoy over Northeast Arabian Sea at 0530 hours IST of 15th June, 2023 about 180km west-southwest of Jakhau Port (Gujarat). To cross Saurashtra & Kutch and adjoining Pakistan coasts between Mandvi and Karachi near Jakhau Port by evening of 15th June as a VSVS,” IMD tweeted.

“Biparjoy is a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm with damaging potential. 2-3m high tidal waves are expected in Kachchh and extremely heavy rainfall with high windspeed is expected in Porbandar and Dwarka districts, Dr Mrityunjay Mohapatra,” Director General, IMD said.

“Indian army has deployed more than 27 relief columns across Gujarat as well as at the forward locations of Mandvi, and Dwarka. Army authorities have also jointly started relief operations along with civil administration as well as with the NDRF teams,” Wing Commander N Manish, Defence PRO & Spokesperson MoD, Gujarat said.
