Chennai: There is a possibility of the Deep Depression (DD) over Southwest Bay of Bengal might marginally intensify into a Cyclonic Storm, before weakening and cross the North Tamil Nadu coast between Karaikal in Puducherry and Mahabalipuram, about 55 km from here, on November 30 morning.
Officials said because of wind shear the movement of the system, which moved at 13 kmph yesterday, lost the steam and was moving slowly, resulting in delay in intensifying as a Cyclonic storm leading to less rains.
Due to lack of cloud cover it will not be a strong Cyclonic Storm as the DD might marginally intensify as a Cyclonic storm and weaken, Met Office Director S Balachandran told reporters today afternoon.
Met office said on Thursday that the DD remained practically stationary during the past six hours and lay centred over the same region about 110 km eastnortheast of Trincomalee, 310 km southeast of Nagappattinam, 410 km southeast of Puducherry and 480 km south-southeast of Chennai.
It is very likely to move nearly north-northwestwards skirting Sri Lanka coast during next 12 hours.
Thereafter, it will continue to move north-northwestwards and cross North Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram around morning of November 30 as a Deep Depression with a wind speed of 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph.
There is a possibility of marginal intensification of the Deep Depression into a Cyclonic Storm with wind speed 65-75 kmph and gusting up to 85 kmph over Southwest Bay of Bengal during the evening of today to tomorrow morning.
A continuous watch is being maintained for the movement and intensification of the system.
