DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran falls victim to cyber crime, loses Rs 99,999 via phone call

Chennai: In a shocking incident, an amount of Rs 99,999 has been illegally debited from the bank account of former Union Minister and DMK Lok Sabha member Dayanidhi Maran.

Mr Dayanidhi Maran has preferred a complaint with the Cyber Crime wing of the Greater Chennai police on Tuesday.

 
Top police sources said a complaint was raised by Mr Dayanidhi Maran, that he received a phone call on October 8 from an unknown number after which Rs.99,999 was debited from his bank account.
 
The complainant said he received calls from an unknown number asking for transaction details disguising himself as bank staff. After which in a short while an unauthorised transaction was found to have happened.
 
Based on the complaint, a case was registered in Cyber Crime Police Station, Central Crime Branch, Greater Chennai Police.
 
Investigation is under process for tracing the fraudsters and a request has been sent to the payment gateway for retrieving the lost amount at the earliest.
 
The public are requested to be aware of online banking frauds and are advised to contact Cyber Crime Helpline number 1930 or register their complaint in the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal – www.cybercrime.gov.in in case of any cyber-related complaints as advised Chennai City Police Commissioner Sandeep Rai Rathore.
