Tripura Police have begun investigating a complaint filed by the family of a newlywed man after they alleged that the ‘bride’ is biologically male. The case has drawn widespread attention, particularly as the couple had reportedly been in a relationship for six years before eloping.
The incident came to light on Sunday in Garji, Udaipur, under Gomati district. According to police, tensions escalated after the groom’s family made the discovery, leading to a crowd gathering outside the couple’s residence. Some members of the mob allegedly attempted to assault the person identified as the bride before authorities intervened.
The groom’s family has accused the individual of deception and betrayal, claiming the revelation has deeply affected both families and damaged their trust. In an emotional statement to police, the individual — identified as Nayan Das, a resident of Camperbazar in Agartala — reportedly acknowledged concealing his biological identity, saying his love for his partner drove him to take extreme steps. He expressed strong feelings for his spouse while also admitting that the situation had caused distress.
Investigators said allegations of financial coercion have also surfaced, with the groom’s family claiming money was taken under pressure. Responding to these claims, Nayan admitted to borrowing money but stated that he had also provided emotional and other forms of support to his partner during difficult times.
Police further revealed that Nayan’s parents, Sukdeb Das and Monti Das, were aware that he had left home but were not informed about the full circumstances surrounding the marriage.
Authorities have confirmed that an inquiry is underway to ascertain the facts and determine whether any criminal offence has been committed.
