INS Vikrant: All you need to know about 1st Made in India Aircraft-Carrier

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday commissioned India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant in Kochi. It’s largest ship ever built in India's maritime history.

Let’s take a look at its features:
 
  1. It is bigger than two football fields (262 meters) and 18 floors tall.
  2. It displaces about 45,000 tonnes.
  3. It’s hangar is as big as two Olympic-size pools.
  4. It has 14 decks with 2,300 compartments including unique cabin for female officers, and can house 1,700 people.
  5. It can hold 250 tankers of fuel.
  6. It is powered by 4 Gas Turbines totalling 88 MW power with Maximum speed of 28 knots (52 Km/Hour).
  7. It is capable of operations up to a range of over 7,000 nautical miles.
  8. It can sail for 45 days without refueling.
  9. It is capable of supporting 30 aircraft comprising of MIG-29K fighter jets, Kamov-31, MH-60R multi-role helicopters, in addition to indigenously manufactured Advanced Light Helicopters and Light Combat Aircraft (Navy).
  10. It is equipped with 32 Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missiles.
  11. It comprises 16-bed mini hospital with 2 operation theatres, CT scan machine and dental facilities.
  12. It is built at a cost of Rs 20,000 crore.
  13. It is designed by Warship Design Bureau and built by Cochin Shipyard Limited 
  14. It took 13 years to make the indigenous Vikrant.
