Ranchi: The last rites of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) patriarch and former Chief Minister of the state will be performed on Tuesday afternoon at 2 pm in his ancestral village, Nemra, near Barka Nala in Bokaro district.
His younger son, Basant Soren, is expected to perform the final rituals. Senior political leaders including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi are expected to attend the funeral, alongside hundreds of party workers, supporters, and members of tribal community who fondly called him “Dishom Guru.”
Soren, 81, passed away yesterday morning at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi. He was undergoing treatment for over a month due to kidney related complications. Jharkhand govt. has announced a three-day mourning till August 6. National flags are flying at half-mast and all official works have been suspended during this period.
Tight security arrangements have been made in Nemra ahead of the ceremony, which is expected to draw large crowds.
Shibu Soren, a towering figure in Jharkhand’s political and cultural landscape, was instrumental in the movement for separate statehood and served as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand thrice. Throughout his life, he remained the ideological spine of the JMM and a revered figure among the state’s tribal community.
