Srinagar: Scores of Kashmir University (KU) students on Wednesday staged a protest against the ban imposed by the Centre on Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI).
Raising slogans in favour of their demands, the students from various departments of KU boycotted their classes and took out a protest rally inside the campus against the five-year ban.

Holding placards and banners, which read, 'Ban on JeI is Ban on Islam', 'We stand with JeI', besides other slogans, the protesting students demanded immediate withdrawal of the ban.

The protestors also demanded release of JeI leaders and activities, who were arrested by security forces during the last couple of weeks. The demonstrating students later dispersed peacefully.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) banned JeI for the next five years, besides allegedly arrested about 250 of its activities and leaders in the valley. The move comes after 40 CRPF jawans were killed in a fidayeen attack on a security force convoy on February 14 on Srinagar-Jammu national highway in south Kashmir district of Pulwama.

Besides the ban, security of various separatist leaders and mainstream politicians was withdrawn after the attack.(UNI)
