Amid rising tensions with Pakistan, following the Pahalgam terror attack, the Ministry of Home Affairs has asked states to conduct civil defence mock drills on May 7 to create awareness among people about rescue preparedness in case of an attack.
What is Civil Defence Mock Drill?
A Civil Defence Mock Drill is a preparedness exercise aimed to test how quickly and effectively a civilian population can respond to war-like emergencies like missile strikes or aerial attacks. It simulates real-world scenarios, including air raid sirens, lights-out drills, and emergency services responses, to reduce panic and ensure public safety.
Key Components Of Civil Defence Mock Drill
1. Air Raid Sirens: Testing alarm systems to alert the public of aerial threats, giving people crucial seconds to find safety.
2. Training Civilians: Educating people on self-protection during hostile attacks – such as drop-and-cover techniques, locating nearby shelters, basic first aid, and staying calm under stress.
5. Evacuation Plan Rehearsals: Practicing evacuation procedures in high-risk zones.
The last nationwide Civil Defence Mock Drill was held during the 1971 India-Pakistan war. The May 7 drill marks a significant exercise in over fifty years, aiming to strengthen emergency preparedness and coordination across 244 districts.
