North India shivers: Capital chills; UP death toll 20

New Delhi/Bhopal: With a low of 4.2 degrees C, the national Capital witnessed the coldest day of the season on Friday while in Bhopal, the mercury settled at 6.2 degree Celsius, seven notches below normal.The Hindi heartland shivered. Jaipur recorded a low of 4.2 deg C, Lucknow 8 deg C, Chandigarh 8 deg C, Dehradun 7 deg C and  Shimla 3 deg C. 
The cold conditions are attributed to a confluence of approaching western disturbance and strong low level easterly winds, a rare phenomenon.Death toll, due to cold, touched 20 on Friday in Uttar Pradesh. So far, three people have died in Fatehpur and two each in Banda, Hamirpur, Auraiyya and Kanpur rural.In Aligarh, the mercury dipped to 3.6 degrees C. With a high of 11.4 degrees C, Kanpur broke a 48-year-old record . 
 
All schools from pre-primary to class 12th of all the boards are closed till December 28 in UP. 
Fog affected bus, rail and flight services in the region.(UNI)
