The Indian Armed Forces launched ‘Operation Sindoor', hitting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, from where terrorist attacks against India have been planned and directed, a Defence Ministry statement said.

Altogether, nine sites have been targeted.

"Our actions have been focused, measured and non-escalatory in nature. No Pakistani military facilities have been targeted. India has demonstrated considerable restraint in selection of targets and method of execution," the statement said.

These steps come in the wake of the barbaric Pahalgam terrorist attack, in which 25 Indians and one Nepali citizen were murdered.

"We are living up to the commitment that those responsible for this attack will be held accountable," it said.

The government will hold a detailed briefing on Operation Sindoor' later in the day.

Pakistan PM says Indian strikes constitute 'act of war'

Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described the Indian attack as an "act of war."

"Pakistan has every right to give a robust response," he wrote in Urdu on X.

"The Pakistani nation and the Pakistan Armed Forces know very well how to deal with the enemy," he added.

How did we get to this point?

On April 22, gunmen killed 26 people, most of whom were tourists, near a resort close to the mountain town of Pahalgam in Indian-administered Kashmir.

The Pahalgam attacks have sparked one of the worst crises between India and Pakistan in years.

New Delhi and Islamabad downgraded diplomatic ties, and India suspended a key water-sharing treaty with Pakistan.

There were also days of cross-border firing from both sides, with no reported casualties.

India briefs Trump administration on Pakistan strikes

India's Embassy in Washington said that India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval had spoken to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and briefed him on the action taken.

"India's actions have been focused and precise," the embassy said in a statement, adding that Rubio, who is also currently the acting US national security advisor, had been briefed "on the actions taken."

The statement began by stating "terrorists killed 26 civilians in Jammu and Kashmir in a brutal and heinous attack."

'World cannot afford' India-Pakistan confrontation: UN

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is "very concerned" about "Indian military operations across the Line of Control and international border."

Guterres "calls for maximum military restraint from both countries," the Secretary-General's spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said.

"The world cannot afford a military confrontation between India and Pakistan."
