PM Modi and HM Shah terms Emergency as the "Dark chapter" of history

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday hit out at the Congress over the 1975 emergency saying that the 'dark days of emergency' can never be forgotten.

Taking to Twitter, PM Modi said, "The period from 1975 to 1977 witnessed a systematic destruction of institutions. Let us pledge to do everything possible to strengthen India’s democratic spirit, and live up to the values enshrined in our Constitution."

One June 25, 1975, a situation of emergency was declared by the then president Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed on the recommendation of the Indira Gandhi-led Congress government at the Centre which remained in effect from June 25, 1975, to March 21, 1977.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday described the Emergency imposed in the country on June 25, 1975 as a dark chapter in the history of independent India.

Mr Shah, in a series of tweets in Hindi said, ''Salute to the sacrifice of all the countrymen who fought relentlessly for the protection of the constitution and democracy of the country while suffering the brutal tortures of the ruthless rule for 21 months.''''On this day in 1975, Congress killed the world's largest democracy by imposing emergency on the country in the selfishness and arrogance of power. Innumerable Satyagrahis were imprisoned overnight and the press was locked. Taking away the fundamental rights of the citizens, made the Parliament and the court a mute spectator,'' the Union Home Minister said.

''The Emergency imposed to quell the voices against one family is a dark chapter in the history of independent India,'' he said.Emergency was imposed in the country for a 21-month period from 1975 to 1977 by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Terming the Emergency imposed in the country in 1975 a 'dark' chapter in the history of Indian democracy, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday said that period is still fresh in people's memories.

In a tweet in Hindi, the Defence Minister said, 'Emergency is known as a 'dark chapter' in the history of Indian democracy. The manner in which the Constitution was misused to attack the democratic traditions of the country can never be forgotten. Even today that era is fresh in the memories of all of us.'

'During this, movements were also held in the country to protect democracy and people endured end number of tortures. We still remember and get inspiration from their sacrifice, courage and struggle.

I salute all those who have played a role in the safeguarding of democracy,' he said in another tweet.
