New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid rich tributes to Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his birth anniversary, saying his lofty ideals motivate millions across the nation.
Taking to twitter, Mr Modi wrote: "I bow to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his Jayanti. His lofty ideals motivate millions across our nation. Dr. Mookerjee devoted his life towards India’s unity and progress. He also distinguished himself as a remarkable scholar and intellectual."
Mookerjee was a politician, barrister and academician, who served as the Minister for Industry and Supply in Jawaharlal Nehru's cabinet.
He then quit the Congress and founded Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951, which later evolved into Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
He was born on July 6, 1901, in Kolkata, West Bengal. In 1953, he went to Kashmir where he was arrested and later died under detention on June 23, 1953.
Revocation of Art 370, true tribute to Dr Syama Prasad Mukherjee: Yogi
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday said the revocation of Article 370, which provided special status to Jammu and Kashmir, was a true tribute to Jana Sangha founder Dr Syama Prasad Mukherjee who never wanted two flags and two constitutions in the country.
The assertion from the chief minister came during a function to celebrate the 120th birth anniversary of Dr Mukherjee. Mr Adityanath garlanded the life-size statue of the leader at Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee (Civil) Hospital in Lucknow.
"Dr Mukherjee, a supporter of Akhand Bharat, opposed the appeasement policy of the Congress. For this reason, he resigned from the post of a cabinet minister in the Jawaharlal Nehru government," Mr Adityanath said while addressing the public.
He said that the revocation of Article 370 is a true tribute to Dr Mukherjee.
The Chief Minister said Dr Mukherjee was opposed to "two Nishan and two Pradhan" in the country, but the then Congress government quietly implemented Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and implemented two laws in the country.
"Prime Minister Narendra Modi has fulfilled the dream of Dr Mukherjee. At present, democracy has been restored in Jammu and Kashmir. Now there is an atmosphere of happiness and every section of the society is getting justice. Work was done to connect Jammu and Kashmir with a new process of development," he said.
