PM pays homage to Savitribai Phule on her birth anniversary

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid homage to social reformer, educationalist Savitribai Phule on the occasion of her birth anniversary.In a tweet in Hindi, Mr Modi pointed out that the social reformer from Maharashtra had contributed immensely in education and women empowerment.
Her contributions will always be hailed as inspiration for the people, the Prime Minister said.
Savitribai Phule was born on January 3, 1831 and expired on March 10, 1897. Along with her husband, Jyotirao Phule, she played an important role in improving women's rights.
 
Late Phule and her husband founded the first Indian girls' school in Pune, at Bhide wada in 1848 and also worked to abolish the discrimination and unfair treatment of people based on caste and gender.(UNI)
