President Murmu terms Prayagraj stampede as 'extremely sad'; PM Modi condoles loss of lives

New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday termed the stampede at the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj as "extremely sad" and expressed grief over the loss of lives of the devotees.

In a post on X, Murmu said, "The stampede incident at Prayagraj Maha Kumbh is extremely sad. I express my condolences to the families of the injured devotees and pray to God that all the injured devotees recover soon".

Modi termed the incident as extremely sad and wished the speedy recovery of all the injured people.

"The accident that happened in Prayagraj Maha Kumbh is extremely sad. My deepest condolences to the devotees who have lost their loved ones in this. Along with this, I wish for the speedy recovery of all the injured," he wrote on X.

He added that the local administration is engaged in helping the victims in every possible way. "In this regard, I have spoken to Chief Minister Yogi ji and I am constantly in touch with the state government".

Earlier talking to reporters, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister said the situation is under control and few devotees have suffered serious injuries.

Adityanath said about eight to ten crore people were present for ‘Amrit Snan’ on Wednesday morning at the spot and urged people to remain cautious.

A stampede broke out at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj around 2 a.m of Wednesday ahead of the 'Amrit Snan' on 'Mauni Amavasya.'

According to officials, a large number of pilgrims turned up for a holy bath on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya, which triggered the stampede-like incident.
