New Delhi: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday assured Prime Minister Narendra Modi of all possible cooperation in safely evacuating Indians stranded in Sumy even as the Indian leader called for direct talks between Putin and his Ukraine counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky.
Putin gave the assurance about evacuation when Modi told him on the telephone the importance of safely taking out the Indians trapped in Sumy in Ukraine at the earliest, government sources said.
The telephone call lasted for about 50 minutes. "The two leaders discussed the evolving situation in Ukraine. Putin briefed Modi on the status of negotiations between the Ukrainian and Russian teams," the sources said.
Modi urged Putin to hold direct talks with President Zelensky of Ukraine besides the ongoing negotiations between their teams, the sources said.
Modi appreciated the announcement of ceasefire and establishment of humanitarian corridors in parts of Ukraine, including Sumy. (UNI)
