Rape accused attempts suicide in Burail jail

Chandigardh: The main accused in gang rape of a 21-year-old girl in Sector 53 here, on Monday attempted to commit suicide by stabbing himself with a piece of broken-glass, police sources said.

According to the police, Mohammed Irfan, who was scheduled to be taken to court, attempted suicide in local Burail jail this morning. He has been admitted to Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32.Irfan was arrested three days back and his two accomplices Kismat Ali and Mohammed Garib were arrested on Saturday from Amethi and Faizabad of Uttar Pradesh.

According to police, on November 17, a 21-year-old girl boarded Irfan's auto rickshaw to go to Mohali, where she is residing as a paying guest. Ali and Garib were already there in auto posing as passengers. Irfan allegedly took auto towards Sector 42 on the pretext of fueling his vehicle but he took his auto at a secluded place in Sector 53 where they raped the girl. (UNI)
