Sri Lankan pirates rob fishing nets worth Rs 2 lakhs from 2 Tamil Nadu boats

Nagapattinam (Tamil Nadu): Unidentified Sri Lankan nationals robbed fishing nets, a walkie-talkie, GPS gadget and mobile phone from two Indian fishing boats in two separate incidents on mid-sea off Kodiakkarai coast in Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu, fisheries officials said here on Thursday.
 
The incident took place late on Wednesday after five fishermen set sail into the sea in a fibre boat from Arcottuthurai fishing village here. This is the fourth incident of Sri Lankan nationals robbing belongings of Indian fishermen so far this month.
 
When they were engaged in fishing several nautical miles southeast of the Kodiakkarai coast in Nagapattinam district, three armed Sri Lankan nationals on a fibre boat fitted with a high-speed engine and approached the Indian boat.
 
The Sri Lankans threatened the Indian fishers with arms and robbed the fishing net weighing 400 kilograms worth Rs two lakhs and escaped on their boat.
 
In another incident, four fishermen from Kodiakkarai had ventured into the sea for fishing in a fibre boat.
 
When they were fishing on high seas about 14 nautical miles from Kodiakkarai coast on Wednesday night, an unidentified Sri Lankan gang came on two high-speed fibre boats threatened the Indian fishers and robbed fishing net, a GPS gadget and a mobile phone valued at Rs three lakh from them and sped.
 
The affected fishermen, who returned to the coast on Thursday morning, lodged a complaint with the Coastal Security Group (CSG) of Tamil Nadu Marine Police at Vedaranyam.
