Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) leader A Ganeshamurthi, the sitting Lok Sabha MP from Tamil Nadu’s Erode, passed away on Thursday morning due to cardiac arrest, ANI reported.

The 77-year-old senior MDMK leader reportedly attempted suicide by consuming poisonous tablets at his home on March 24.

Ganeshamurthi complained of vomiting and was rushed to a hospital in Erode in an unconscious state on Sunday.

After first aid, he was rushed to a private hospital in Coimbatore where his condition was said to be critical.

Ganeshamurthi was the sitting Lok Sabha MP from Erode. He is a member of the MDMK party but was elected on a DMK ticket in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. He was reportedly upset over the party’s refusal to give him a ticket to contest from the Erode seat in the Lok Sabha polls. The DMK has fielded its candidate in Erode and has decided to give the Tiruchy seat to the MDMK. Durai Vaiko, son of MDMK general secretary Vaiko, has been named the party’s candidate from Tiruchy.
