Taxes on oil to be used to build roads, schemes for poor: BJP

Shillong: The BJP has defended the rise in fuel prices in the country saying that the taxes on oil collected are going to used to build roads and be utilized for schemes meant for the poor.

“It means in terms of IT tax benefits being given to the middle class,” BJP spokesperson Nalin Kohli told reporters.

He said the government is studying the situation and that it was only a temporary situation.

Kohli pointed out that the spike in fuel prices is on two accounts – one is global factors which are not in India’s control and the second reason is the fall of the Rupee which is part of the global movement of currency.

“We understand and are sensitive to the pain that increase in petroleum prices causes and at the same time there is a recognition that there has to be a holistic view to it states and the centre all have to come and take a holistic decision because on the other hand whatever has been,” he said.

Asked if the hike in fuel prices would be the down fall of the BJP-led NDA government in the centre after the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Kohli said that even after demonetization people said that the BJP will be wiped out but it won Uttar Pradesh in a historic manner.

“India wants responsive and responsible government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi government will go to the people and show what is the work done,” he added. (UNI)
