New Delhi: There is a great setback for noted social activist, Teesta Setalvad, as the Supreme Court on Friday dismissed her and her husband Javed Anand's plea, seeking to defreeze their bank accounts in Gulberg Society fund embezzlement case.Teesta, her husband Javed Anand, and their NGO, Sabrang Trust, are accused of charges of misappropriation of funds which were meant to build a memorial and relief funds for 2002 riot victims in Gujarat.

The apex court bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra, passed the order after hearing a detailed argument and submissions from the petitioners and the respondents in the matter."We are dismissing the petition in the case, " the top court on Friday said in its order. The Supreme Court earlier had in July reserved its order on Setalvad's plea for defreezing of her bank account and NGO.

The Gujarat police had freezed Teesta's accounts in the wake of the allegations that she was involved in corruption. Challenging it, she and her husband moved the apex court seeking relief from it.Teesta vehemently denied the charges and claimed innocence in the case.

Denying any wrongdoing by her, Teesta refused Gujarat Government's allegations and had told the apex court that the Gujarat state government was harassing her and wanted to paralyse her activities. (UNI)
