According to the child’s mother, the incident occurred late on Friday when the accused reportedly took their one-year-old daughter out of the house and fed her poison mixed with a cold drink. The baby soon began vomiting and was rushed to a local hospital. Doctors then referred her to Agartala Government Medical College in critical condition, where she was declared dead.
The mother alleged that her husband never wanted a girl and had subjected her to prolonged mental and physical abuse since the baby’s birth, solely because she could not deliver a son.
She claimed Debbarma had tortured the child and made several previous attempts to kill her.
She said her sister witnessed an act where Rathindra was seen pouring cold drinks on the baby and informed her immediately, but by the time her husband reached Agartala. The accused Rathindra Debbarma was spotted nearby when they went to the hospital.
Following the revelation, enraged locals at GB Pant Hospital caught hold of Debbarma before police intervened to prevent an attack. Officers from Champahour police station took him into custody for questioning.
