Uttarakhand: Several houses and families were reportedly trapped under debris in the Rudraprayag and Chamoli districts on Friday in the wee hours following two big cloudbursts in the region. This was confirmed by Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who prayed for the safety of the victims.

The chief minister said the rescue operation was launched by the local police and the District Disaster Management Authority while State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams were on the way to launch a search and rescue operation in disaster-hit areas.

Pushkar Singh Dhami said, 'A disturbing report tells that some families have been trapped in debris flow.' This happened due to the cloudbursts in the Bareth Dungar Tok area and in the Deval area. I am touch with the officials and have issued instructions for the safety and security.

"A distressing report has been received that due to cloudbursts in the Bareth Dungar Tok area under the Buskedar tehsil of Rudraprayag district and in the Deval area of Chamoli district, some families have been trapped due to debris flow", said chief minister in his social media post on X.

"Relief and rescue operations are underway at a war footing by the local administration; in this regard, I am in constant contact with officials and have issued necessary instructions to the Disaster Secretary and District Magistrates to ensure the effective conduct of rescue operations."

"I pray to Baba Kedar for the safe well-being of all."

District officials informed that preliminary information gathered from the tragedy-hit locations finds that two people were reportedly missing from the Basukedar area of Rudraprayag. However, officials confided that missing figures may be much more than this, and we can get to know once the search operation is taken up in a big way.

Apart from the Rudraprayag Mepta village area, the Dewal block of Chamoli district bordering Kumaon was also hit by the cloudburst, resulting in several houses trapped under debris and people missing from the village.

It's notable that this is the second big cloudburst in Chamoli, as six days ago, the Tharli block was hit by a cloudburst, resulting in two deaths and thick debris deposition in several houses.

More than 60 people are still forced to stay in the relief camps of the district administration.

On the other hand, news of a cloudburst was also reported from Tehri District as well.
