New Delhi: Tihar jail administration has suspended 28 jail officials and terminated the service of two contractual employees for allegedly helping former Unitech promoters Sanjay Chandra and Ajay Chandra, a senior jail official said on Thursday.
The jail authorities wrote to Delhi government to suspend two officers, one superintendent and a deputy superintendent among others, who were found prima facie complicit in the matter during the police inquiry, a senior jail official said.
The action came after the Supreme Court ordered the suspension of jail officials.
After going through the enquiry report, the apex court granted permission to conduct a full-fledged criminal investigation into the case. Following which the Delhi Police Crime Branch registered an FIR on Tuesday under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Indian Penal Code.
Earlier, the top court directed Delhi Police Commissioner to make an inquiry in the case. Police had submitted the inquiry report on September 28, following which the Supreme Court ordered the suspension of jail officers on October 6, and registration of FIR against them.
During the probe, 32 officials of Tihar Jail No 7 were found to be complicit with the Chandras, who have been involved in a fraud case, an official said. (UNI)
