Puducherry: 30 Tamil activists held as they burnt copies of JIPMER’s ‘Hindi imposition’ circular

Puducherry: As many as 30 Tamil activists, including three women, were arrested when they burnt the copies of circular of Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) directing the use of Hindi in records and communications, which triggered a row.
It may be noted that when the circular came out, several political parties organized agitations in front of JIPMER alleging imposition of Hindi. Meanwhile, Tamizhar Desiya Periyakkam had announced that it will burn the copies of the circular in front of JIPMER today.
Along with volunteers of Naam Thamizhar Katchi, Tamizhar Kalam and Ulaga Thamizh Kazhagam, among others, they took out a procession from Thattanchavady to JIPMER.
As the procession reached the Subbiah Marriage hall, police stopped the volunteers which resulted an altercation between them.
When one section of the agitators tried to burn the copies of the circular, police seized them while, another batch ran to the 7th gate of JIPMER and burnt the copies. (UNI)
