Ashwin shatters Steyn's record for most wickets in a Test season

Dharamsala: Star India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin achieved another milestone in his career today as he shattered South Africa pacer Dale Steyn's record of most of Test wickets in a cricketing season.

After clinching the wicket of Australia skipper Steve Smith in the ongoing fourth and final Test being played at the HPCA stadium in Dharamsala, Ashwin surpassed Steyn and has now 79 wickets from 13 Tests in the 2016-17 season with an average of 25.64.

Ashwin had earlier equalled Steyn's records of picking 78 wickets in a season after the Chennai lad picked the wicket of Glen Maxwell in the Ranchi Test.Steyn had claimed 78 Test wickets in the 2007/08 season.

Earlier in the Pune Test of the ongoing series, the 30-year-old broke Kapil Dev's (63) record of most number of wickets by an Indian in a home season, which the former captain had set in 1979/80 season. (UNI)
