BJP takes big lead in MCD, leads in 120/170 wards, close fight b/w AAP, Cong for 2nd spot

New Delhi: The BJP today took a huge lead in early counting trends for the MCD polls, leading in nearly 120 wards out of 170 wards while the Congress and the Aam Aadmi party were at second and third spot respectively. Early trends of counting for the polls showed the BJP was leading in 120 wards out of the 170 wards for which trends were available. There was a close fight between Congress and the Aam Aadmi party for the second spot. While the AAP led in 24 wards, the Congress led in 22.
 

The BJP took a big lead in counting trends for all the three Municipal corporations, leading in 30 wards out of the 47 wards of the EDMC while it led in 45 wards of the North Delhi Municipal corporation and 57 wards of the South Delhi Municipal corporation. Counting of votes for the elections to the three Municipal corporations began this morning amid tight security arrangements. Counting of votes began at 0800 hours at 35 counting centres set up by the state election commission across the city.

The counting of votes for 104 wards of the South Delhi Municipal corporation is being held at 13 counting centres while 16 counting centres have been set up for 103 wards of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation. Election to the Sarai Pipal Thala ward was postponed due to the death of the candidate from the ward. Counting for 63 wards of the East Delhi Municipal Corporation is being held at six counting centres. Election to the Maujpur ward in EDMC has been postponed due to the death of a candidate. Election to the three MCDs were held on April 23.

The exit polls for the elections predicted a sweep for the BJP in the three MCDs, while putting the Aam Aadmi Party at second spot and the Congress in third spot. The Aam Aadmi Party has raised a question mark on the working of the EVMs and has warned that of the results of the elections as per the exit polls, the party would launch an agitation. A total of 54 per cent voters exercised their franchise in the elections to the 270 wards of the MCDs. (UNI)
