Congress leader demands GI tag of Makhana in name of Mithila

Patna: Congress MLC Prem Chandra Mishra on Friday opposed the change of GI tag of Makhana and demanded that it should be in the name of Mithila as had been earlier assured by NDA government on floor of the House.

Mr Mishra said here that responding to a question on GI tag of Makhana, Bihar Agriculture Minister Amrendra Pratap Singh had assured on floor of the House that proposed GI tag of Makhana would not be changed and it would remain in name of Mithila.

The Minister had said that the product would be known as 'Mithila ka Makhana', he pointed out quoting assurance given by the government on floor of the House.

Congress leader wondered how despite assurance of the government, a decision was taken in a meeting in Patna to change the GI tag of Makhana. As per new decision, the product would be known as 'Bihar ka Makhana', he added.

Mr Mishra demanded immediate intervention of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in this connection and restore original tag of Makhana as had been assured by the government earlier.

Makhana was agro product of Mithila region and any changes would be great injustice, he remarked. (UNI)
