Cyclone 'Vardah' makes landfall, 10 killed in TN

Chennai: The Severe Cyclonic Storm 'Vardah' made landfall near here killing 10 persons in Tamil Nadu even as high velocity of winds pounded the city and coastal districts of Tamil Nadu, uprooting number of trees, disrupting flights, Train services and throwing life out of gear.

The Cyclone made landfall this afternoon with winds blowing 90 kmph."The western part of the cyclone Vardah has crossed the coast around 10 km north of Chennai," S. Balachandran, Director at the Regional Meteorological Centre, told Reporters here.
"Now the central part is crossing.

Flights resumed, Depression to weaken into low pressure

The flights which were suspended at the Airport here yesterday on account of Cyclone was resumed today and the power has also been restored in the city.

India Meteorological Department in a bulletin said the Deep Depression over north Tamil Nadu moved further west-southwestwards during past 06 hrs with a speed of 20 kmph, weakened into a depression and lay centered at 0530 hrs over north interior Tamil Nadu, near Latitude 12.5ºN and Longitude 78.0ºE, about 50 km west of Tiruppattur and 40 km north of Dharmapuri.
