Delhi Police arrests builder for cheating former cricketer Chetan Sharma and 12 others

New Delhi: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Delhi Police said that it has arrested the builder accused in a case of cheating over a dozen people including former Indian cricketer Chetan Sharma.
A team led by ACP Ramesh Kumar Narang and consisting of SI Praveen Badsara, ASI Jaipal, Constable Beerpal under the supervision of DCP Mohammed Ali, arrested the accused Sameesh Chawla on Friday from Mehrauli, the police said.
The accused, Sameesh Chawla has been arrested based on the complaint made by Monika Khattar. Chawla is alleged to have duped the victims on the pretext of lucrative returns on investments.
According to the EOW, the victims were cheated to the tune of Rs 1.34 Crore in 2017.
"Investigation revealed that accused Sameesh Chawla and his family members used to induce and lure the victims residing in their vicinity to invest with them under the pretext of higher return. The accused received the money as hard cash as well as through banking channels," the police said.
The EOW also said that it has busted the modus operandi of the accused adding that his wife and father were also accomplices to the alleged crime.
"Accused persons induced the complainant and other victims to invest with them on the pretext of lucrative return. Initially, the accused persons gave them regular returns for a short period to inculcate the feeling of trust. After taking the money, the accused persons neither paid the principal amount nor any return," the police said.
Additional Commissioner of Police (EOW) RK Singh said that further investigation in the case is under progress. (UNI)
