Second scholar of JNU accused of Rape after Anmol Ratan, arrested

New Delhi: Delhi Police today arrested a PhD scholar of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) for allegedly raping a 26-year-old woman on the pretext of marriage. According to police, a rape case was registered against JNU PhD scholar at the Vasant Kunj police station under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code. Police said the complainant had approached the police, complaining that Ajay Singh, resident of Madhya Pradesh, had raped her on the pretext of marriage. The victim and the accused had been in the relationship since the victim had come to Delhi in 2010.
The victim had been requesting the accused to marry her, but despite repeated request; the accused was not marrying her, police said. Then, the police registered a case under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code. Later, the accused was arrested after the police recorded the statement of the complainant under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) Last month, another PhD scholar was suspended from JNU after he was accused of rape by a fellow student.
A 28-year-old research student had alleged that a fellow student, identified as Anmol Ratan, raped her after offering her a spiked drink in his hotel room in the University on August 20. The All India Students' Association (AISA) expelled Ratan, who was an activist of the Student outfit and police registered a case against him. (UNI)
