Muslim Personal Law Board opposes uniform civil code, to boycott law Commission

New Delhi: Opposing the proposed uniform civil code as 'not feasible for the country', the All India Muslim Law Board today said that it would not respond to the questionnaire of the Law Commission released to elicit public opinion on triple talaq and other practices. 'A uniform civil code is not good for this nation which had so much cultural diversity.

The culture of all communities has to be respected and no single ideology should be imposed,' Board’s General Secretary Maulana Wali Rahmani said at a press conference here. The Board’s reaction comes close on the heels of the Centre submitting an affidavit in the Supreme Court opposing the practice of pronouncing triple talaq in one go. Maulana Rahmani said Muslims were living in India ,whose Constitution had guaranteed them the freedom to practice their religion and protect and conserve their culture.

He said the Law Commission was not acting independently, but at the behest of the Centre. Architect of the Constitution Bhimrao Ambedkar had ensured that all communities enjoyed their religious freedom in the interest of national unity and harmony, but the Modi government was trying to disturb this arrangement through imposition of a uniform civil code, he said. Addressing the press conference, Maulana Arshad Madani of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind said the Modi Government was trying to divert attention from its 'failures' by raking up the uniform civil code issue.

'Focus on such moves instead of on securing the country’s borders was fraught with dangers for the country as it would lead to internal strife,' he said. Rector of Darul Uloom Deobad Maulan Abul Qasim Nomani also cautioned against tampering with the rights guaranteed to minorities under the Constitution.  (UNI)
