Rail Budget to merge with General Budget ending 92 year old practice

New Delhi: In a significant decision, the government today decided to amalgamate the Rail Budget with the General Budget, ending 92-year-old British-era tradition of having a separate budget for the two.

The decision was taken by the union cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Addressing media persons after the cabinet meeting, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, said, “Railways will retain their functional autonomy and delegation of financial powers as per the existing guidelines.
