Social Media a Potential Challenge for Mainstream Media

Hyderabad: A three-day workshop on "Usages of Social Media Tools for Future Media" ended on Thursday with leading experts from the field of journalism describing it as a potential challenge to the conventional and corporate media.
However, they advised caution in usage of information received from the sources. If used judiciously, it will be helpful in becoming a good journalist, they opined.The workshop was organized by the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU).
Addressing at the valedictory function, famous television Journalist Shams Tahir Khan (Aaj Tak), while referring to the widespread discontent about the deteriorating media standards especially with regard to television channels, asked the audience, who is responsible for this? If you don't like any channel you should not view it, he suggested.
Otherwise you are supporting the deterioration. Mere complaining is a sign of weakness, he remarked.Senior Broadcast Journalist Satish Jacob in his presidential remarks regarded social media and its numerous application as a treasure house of information. This will indeed help the budding journalists, he said.
Mr. Pankaj Pachori, Editor Go News, the media partner of the workshop revealed that same module which was used during a workshop in Harvard University was provided to MANUU students.
He expressed satisfaction over the level of involvement and participation by the students.Mr.Mohammed Azam Shahid (Bengaluru) remarked that journalists with proper understanding of ethics are badly needed in today's media world.Prof. Sanjay Dwivedi, Bhopal dismissed the effectiveness of social media and questioned its credibility.
Mr. Amir Haque, Resident Editor, Times Now (Lucknow) advised the students to focus on optimum utilization of the resourses available at University.He described social media as a future challange to corporate media.(UNI)
