The BBC World Service has released a special episode of the podcast Kalki Presents: My Indian Life about a young Indian mountaineer who was tragically killed in an avalanche in the Himalayas last year. The episode has been released in both Hindi and English and will be broadcast on the BBC World Service.

Savita Kanswal was an inspirational mountaineer who had become the first Indian woman to scale Mount Everest and Mount Makalu in a span of 16 days. She was just 26 years old when she was killed in the avalanche, which claimed the lives of 27 people in October 2022.

Savita had been interviewed for the third season of Kalki Presents: My Indian Life but the avalanche happened before her episode of the podcast was released.  Savita’s family has agreed that the episode should go ahead, to tell her story. This special episode features Kalki Koechlin’s interview with Savita and Kalki also speaks to Savita’s sister, Manorma. It is the story of how a girl from a remote village in the Himalayas in North India, who had to trek to and from school every day, overcame challenges to realise her dream of climbing the world’s highest mountain.

Kalki Presents: My Indian Life, hosted by Kalki Koechlin, is about being young and Indian in the 21st century. The Bollywood actor shares remarkable stories from all over India.

The podcast Kalki Presents My Indian Life is an All Things Small production for the BBC World Service.  All Things Small - part of Rainshine Entertainment - is a Mumbai based company, which focuses on telling true stories from South Asia.

It is also available on BBC Hindi’s Facebook, YouTube, Gaana, Spotify, JioSavan and most worldwide podcast and audio streaming platforms.
