Triple talaq row: Muslim organisations step up protest against Centre

Lucknow: Intensifying the campaign against the Centre and courts 'meddling' in Sharia laws, especially the triple talaq issue, All-India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has asked the Imams (Head) of mosques to sensitize people about the rights of women given by Islam. AIMPLB member Maulana Khalid Rasheed Farangi Mahali appealed to all the Imams of city mosques to spread awareness amongst people about the rights given to women by Islam after the Friday prayers yesterday.

In his address at Masjid Taqwiyatul Iman, he quoted several Quranic verses and sayings of Prophet Mohammed about women having equal status and also about inheritance. He also quoted sayings of the Prophet are regarding the rights of wives in Islamic laws. “Any kind of modifications in Sharia laws cannot be tolerated and we will be firm in their protection. Muslims should keep aside the differences among themselves to protect the Islamic laws from political powers,” he asserted.

On the triple talaq, the cleric said the interference of Central government tantamounts to violation of the Constitutional rights given to minorities. In many mosques of the city, the Imams addressed people and passed on the message of AIMPLB regarding the triple talaq issue after Friday prayers. Recently, AIMPLB launched a signature campaign against the affidavit of Central government and law commission on the triple talaq issue. People in large numbers, especially females, took part in the campaign.

On October 14, Muslim women’s outfit Bazm-eKhwateen opposed the campaign launched by AIMPLB and announced their support to ban on triple talaq in the country. As per their claims, triple talaq was not in accordance with Quran and it was an invention of clerics. Even the Shia Muslims have distanced themselves from the issue. According to All India Shia Personal Law Board spokesperson Maulana Yasoob Abbas, there is no such things as oral triple talaq in Shia Islamic laws. (UNI)
