Tripura: 16-yr-old Muslim girl, who married 23-yr-old Hindu youth, rescued by police, 5 including RSS leader arrested

Agartala: The 16-yr-old Muslim girl who had got married with 23-yr-old Hindu youth escaping the family was rescued in a pre-dawn operation on Tuesday at Dharmanagar in North Tripura after 66 days of eloping.

The high court of Tripura had directed Sepahijala district police to find out the girl at the earliest. The victim’s father had alleged that her daughter has been abducted by a Hindu youth identified as Suman Sarkar (23) of Chandantilla area of Bishalgarh on July 24 last.

The Superintendent of Police (SP), Sepahijala Krishnendu Chakraborty said that a police team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Ajay Kumar Das rescued the girl and detained the youth Suman Sarkar from Dharmanagar along with his minor wife.

Reportedly the girl is now two months pregnant and she was converted to Hindu. The couple has been kept in the police custody and the next course of action would be taken after getting the direction from the high court, Chakraborty said.

The victim's father alleged in high court that his daughter, a student of Class IX when returning from private tuition on the day Suman Sarkar had kidnapped her but police have not been doing enough to search out the girl.

The bench comprises Chief Justice of the high court Justice Akil Kureshi and Justice S G Chattopadhyay had directed the police to find out the girl and report the court. Soon after the direction, police arrested five persons including an RSS leader identified as Tapan Debnath from Indranagar area of Agartala on charges of collaborating in the abduction.

Based on the input from the RSS leader, police rescued the couple who had given shelter to couple at his sister's house initially and later they were shifted to Dharmanagar. (UNI)
