Agartala: A Tripura village witnessed an unusual event on Saturday where a poor family celebrated the birth of a female child with the villagers on the street.

The seven days old child on mother lap was followed by a group of her neighbours with a colourful dress and music bands made a procession from the hospital to their house.

The baby girl was welcomed in the house like welcoming a Goddess in the family in Hindu ritual.

According to the report, the wife of one Suman Debnath, a small businessman of Khagendra Chowdhury Para in Shantirbazar of South Tripura gave birth to a girl child last week in the district hospital. The mother and child were released yesterday from the hospital.

“We are happy to get a girl child in the family and she has given us a scope to celebrate her entry into the family. Yet, our family has another girl child but we felt to celebrate her entry. Traditionally, we believe girls are Laxmi and getting a girl child is an indication of prosperity in the family. So, I invited all my neighbours to share the moment of joy,” said Suman Debnath.

A large number of male and female of various age groups with the colourful dress along with a music troupe had assembled in front of the hospital gate in the afternoon. The mother and child were decorated with colourful dresses and ornaments and everybody escorted the child to her home like Goddess, police said.

“We had to restrict the traffic movement on the road to facilitate safe passage for the procession,” said a police officer in Shantirbazar adding that the event demonstrated a unique message to the society when female foeticide, atrocities for dowry on women and social oppression of women became regular phenomena.
